Major auction of Georgia farmland set for February 21

Approximately 6,900 acres of land in Georgia's Sumter County will be offered Thursday, Feb. 21, in one of the biggest Georgia land auctions in years. The land includes approximately 3,800 acres of irrigated farmland.

"You rarely see this much farmland being sold in a single auction in the Southeast -- especially irrigated land with good soils," said R.D. Schrader, president of Schrader Real Estate and Auction Company, which is marketing the land and will conduct the auction. "This is a good area for growing a wide range of crops, including cotton, vegetables, peanuts and corn."

The land will be auctioned in 15 tracts, with land tracts ranging in size from 197 to 1,678 acres.

"With this much land, we expect to see interest from institutional and individual investors, as well as from area farmers who may want to expand," said Schrader. "In addition to the tillable land, the property also has approximately 2,300 acres of timber and recreational land.

"A lot of farmland investors overlook the South, but that's where some of the best values are. The climate is suitable for virtually any crop, and agriculture contributes more than $67 billion -- about 12 percent -- to Georgia's total economic output," said Schrader.

The auction will be conducted at the Lake Blackshear Resort & Golf Club in Cordele, Ga., beginning at 10 a.m. Individuals seeking additional information may visit www.schraderauction.com or call 800-451-2709.
