Christmas Tree Farms, Potential Fruit and Asparagus Ground to Sell in Michigan Land Auction

SHELBY, MI -- Approximately 2,174 acres of farmland in Michigan's Oceana, Mason and Newaygo counties will sell at auction Saturday, Aug. 21, as Christmas tree grower Slocum Brothers Tree Farm consolidates its operations and sells some of its land.

The sale, which includes land that has been in the Slocum family for a century, will include 53 tracts in about 34 locations concentrated in the area east of Hart and Shelby. Approximately 260,000 Christmas trees will be sold separately from the land in 25 tracts. The land has a total of approximately 890,000 Christmas trees.

The property also includes land suitable for growing fruit and asparagus, for hunting, or for use as potential building sites, according to R.D. Schrader, president of Schrader Real Estate and Auction Company, which will manage the auction.

"These properties include some of the best land in the Midwest for growing Fraser Fir, Douglas Fir, Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, White Pine, Scotch Pine and other species that are in high demand. There are also tracts with Maple, Oak and other hardwoods as well as land suitable for fruit trees, vegetables and other row crops," said Schrader.

"The sale will permit some family members to pursue other interests. The Ted Slocum family will continue Slocum Brothers Tree Farm as a single entity," said Schrader. "We are selling the land in small tracts -- most well under 100 acres -- to enable bidders to bid on the combination of tracts that best suit their needs."

Schrader personnel will be available to meet face to face with prospective bidders and provide detailed information from 3 to 6 p.m. on August 5, August 10 and August 20.
